The Redwood Coast Institute
(RCI) is concerned with modern barriers preventing young people from connecting
in responsible ways with their community and themselves. Research indicates
that teen issues in Humboldt County stem largely from a lack of positive rite
of passage experiences available to youth. We define rites-of-passage as the
means by which youth transition into adulthood, fulfilling youths' natural need
to gain acceptance into adult life. If young men and women are not provided
ways to express their ability to make an impact on the world, they create their
own ways. Sometimes this results in misguided rites of passage such as drug
and alcohol abuse, violence, early pregnancy, and more.
RCI's vision is to empower youth through rite-of-passage experiences and share
high-quality educational resources to serve the Redwood Coast community. RCI
provides youth with a safe environment to practice making important decisions,
take on real-life challenges and responsibilities, and think critically about
their place in the world.
